Several Massachusetts fire departments combined to extinguish a residential blaze caused by a lightning strike on Friday. According to Fire Chief Jack Glynn, at just before 5:30 a.m. the entire on-duty crew responded to the scene of a cardiac arrest in a remote part of Abington. Simultaneously, a heavy thunderstorm pushed through the area, causing various fire alarm activations townwide. At the same time, the dispatch center received a report of a possible lightning strike with a building fire at 395 Randolph Street.

Evidence against Matthew Farwell is overwhelming, prosecution says

Matthew Farwell did not go to Sandra Birchmore’s Canton apartment on Feb. 1, 2021, to end their relationship, a federal prosecutor told jurors Friday, Nov. 6. He went to end her life, the prosecutor said , and with it any chance she would reveal that he had sexually abused her when she was a teenager. "On the eve of his wife’s planned c-section, in white out snow conditions, he was there to save himself," Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian A. Fogerty said. "Not to end things with Sandra Birchmore. But to end her. And to end any possibility she would expose him." Fogerty spent an hour and 15 minutes laying out the government’s case in the first part of his closing arguments in federal court in Boston. He called the evidence against the former Stoughton police detective overwhelming. Farwell, 41, is charged with killing a witness to prevent her from communicating with federal law enforcement, and with causing the death of Birchmore’s unborn child. Prosecutors allege he strangled Birchmore, who was 23 and pregnant, and staged her death to look like a suicide. He has pleaded not guilty, and his lawyers contend she died by suicide. Farwell told the judge Wednesday
