Eagle-Vail’s Sullivan Middaugh, the two-time defending XTERRA USA champion, collected his first-career Continental Cup win earlier this month. The 20-year-old won the 2024 Americas Triathlon Cup in Calima, Columbia on May 5th. Middaugh completed the draft-legal road triathlon — which consisted of a 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike and 5-kilometer run — in 57 minutes, 6 seconds to take a 70-second victory over his fellow Project Podium teammate, Keller Norland.
Salomone: Just two flies
Dry-fly season has begun. Most of the fly anglers I know never really put their gear away. Seems like a rod is still within reach 12 months a year. But the flies occupying pockets on fishing vests do get sidelined. Dry flies get stashed until the warmth returns and bugs become active. Those days have arrived. The dry-fly season on the Eagle River yield excellent action with just two flies.

Town of Vail drops art program over political concerns, Danielle SeeWalker gives her perspective
The intersection of art and political or social views is common, as art is a method of communication and self-expression. But what happens when an arts patron decides that the expression of those views is a deal-breaker?. Danielle SeeWalker is a Lakota artist, originally hailing from the Standing Rock Sioux...
Letter: My condolences to Vail’s Art in Public Places
I would like to express my deepest condolences to the town of Vail’s Art in Public Places team. They have chosen to undertake a major endeavor: vetting the work and digital footprint of every potential artist in residence for a hint of political expression — even if that work does not relate to their installations intended for Vail. It’s no small task. Innumerable hours, and innumerable taxpayer dollars, it is now their duty to scour the social media, archive of interviews, and the artist’s catalog of work itself for any indication of partisanship.
Haims: Being ‘old’ depends on your perspective
What is “old” and how much does it vary from person to person?. Answering this question is frequently subjective and ambiguous. When I was an adolescent, I’m pretty sure I perceived my parents as old. However, I’m very sure that I had always viewed my grandparents as old. After all, they were my parents’ parents — thus they were older than my parents so they had to be really old.

Conservation Corner: Weeding our way to a resilient Eagle County
What is a noxious weed, and why should you care? In technical terms, a noxious weed is a non-native, aggressive weed that replaces native vegetation, reduces agricultural productivity, causes wind and water erosion, and poses an increased threat to communities from wildfire. If that all sounds bad, that’s because it is.
