Abilene area sees record rain, large hail from storm

"Some big stuff definitely did appear," said Stephen Kearney, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service Office in San Angelo. Accompanying the storm, which kicked off in the 4 o'clock hour Tuesday afternoon, came lightning and rain blown by strong winds. Tornado warnings were issued just east of Abilene with a brief tornado touchdown reported near Potosi, but no major damage had been reported to the weather service by Wednesday morning. "So far we haven't seen any reports of major damage," Kearney confirmed. "Mainly just tree limbs down, is what we're hearing." The official rain total at Abilene Regional Airport came in at 1.7 inches. Kearney said that broke the previous single-day record of .76 inches for March 10 set back in 1973. The highest wind gust of 53 mph was measured at the airport. Measurements at Dyess
