Forget that two-point loss to undefeated Shenango in the final tune-up leading into the WPIAL football playoffs. Laurel’s track record speaks for itself. “We’ve definitely been rolling along,” Spartans coach Brian Cooper said Friday night after Laurel’s 33-0 victory against visiting Greensburg Central Catholic in a Class A first-round game. “Three out of the last six years, we’ve won our (conference), and two out of those other three years, we were the runner-up in it.”

Beaver Valley Week 1 WPIAL high school football playoff storylines

The WPIAL high school football playoffs are on the horizon and, this week, there are a lot of great first round/quarterfinal matchups surrounding the Beaver Valley. Hopewell is the highest-seeded playoff team in the area, coming in as the No. 3 seed in the Class 3A bracket, while Western Beaver is back in the Class 2A playoffs as the No. 5 seed after securing its second consecutive MAC title. Here are five storylines to watch for in Week 1 of the WPIAL high school football playoffs. Blackhawk looks to contend with McKeesport Blackhawk is back in the postseason for the first time since 2022 and it will have a tough test in front of it in the Class 4A quarterfinals vs. McKeesport. The Tigers are aiming for their fourth consecutive WPIAL championship game with the nation’s top running back recruit, senior Kemon Spell, leading the charge. The running back has missed some time this season due to injury but if he can stay healthy, McKeesport will be hard to stop. While Blackhawk’s defense will be going up against the nation’s top running back, it has the offense to compete, with the unit averaging just under 40 points per game. The
