The creative foodies behind Augusta's former Munchies Lab are giving area diners something else to chew on, this time in Columbia County.

A sweet tooth and a little sense of adventure might be all you need to enjoy Munchies Snacks, which brother and sister Ramiro and Patty Galvan opened March 26. Like the Lab, the customers are encouraged to experiment with their favorite flavors.

Another Galvan restaurant, the authentic-Mexican Taqueria y Carniceria El Rey, is just a few doors down from Munchies Snacks, which opened in March. Though the long-term plans are to find a bigger Munchies space with a more suitable kitchen, the proximity of the two eateries helps in sharing labor and other resources.

But Munchies Snacks doesn’t need a grill right now for its menu that offers new approaches to favorite foods.

Do you like Biscoff cookies? Munchies’ Lotus Flurry lets diners sip or spoon a thick dairy dessert flavored with the shortbread cookies and Biscoff-crust cheesecake.

Are cheese sticks your go-to appetizer? Munchies upgrades the idea with Yuca Cheese Balls – chunks of cassava root deep-fried with cheese, ready to dip in chipotle mayonnaise.

Some snacks are more savory than sweet. Munchies Ramen take a brimming cup of ramen noodles with cheese and corn with a hint of mayo, sitting amid a bed of the customer’s favorite chips.

More-traditional Latin desserts aren’t forgotten, such as Munchies’ Fresas con Crema – berries with cream – and miniature churros, filled with thick dulce de leche, drizzled with chocolate syrup and accompanied by a scoop of ice cream.

With those items, and really with just about anything on Munchies’ menu, customers can add their favorite “munchies” with toppings, sprinkles, candies, fruits and other sides. There are no judgments. If you prefer your slice of tiramisu topped with gummy bears, that’s the way it is cheerfully presented.

Munchies Snacks is in the former Frosty Rolls ice cream parlor at 3830 Washington Rd. in the West Town Shopping Center.
