Former Mt. Pleasant Indian Boarding School Recognized for National Significance

The Mt. Pleasant Indian Industrial Boarding School has been elevated to a national level of significance by the Keeper of the National Register of Historic Places. According to the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan, the designation formally recognizes the site as a surviving representative of the federal off-reservation boarding school system. Originally listed at the state level in 2018, the historic district includes six brick buildings situated on 15 acres within the Isabella Indian Reservation. Of the more than 2,200 Michigan sites on the National Register, it becomes one of only 144 listed at the national level of significance, and one of 8 recognized for American Indian heritage. Established by Congress in 1891, the facility operated from 1893 to 1934, housing between 300 and 375 children annually from kindergarten through eighth grade. According to tribe officials, approximately 225 students died while attending the institution during its operations. An annual Honoring, Healing, and Remembering event celebrates the closing of the school on June 6th, and recognizes the suffering of those children.

Creative 360 welcomes the Harmony Diversity Choir to its programs

Creative 360 is pleased to welcome The Harmony Diversity Choir as an official program of the community arts and wellness organization. The choir, which has been based at Creative 360 since 2024, has transitioned from Great Lakes Bay Pride to Creative 360, building on a partnership that has supported the choir’s rehearsals and performances. “The Harmony Diversity Choir has been a mainstay of our programming for the last decade,” said Scott Ellis, executive director of Great Lakes Bay Pride. “We’re pleased to collaborate with Creative 360 to transition this important program to an organization with a focus on the arts so that it may continue to thrive for years to come.” Founded in 2016 by Midland residents Greg Gwaltney and Chris Lauckner, The Harmony Diversity Choir uses the language of music to educate and advocate for the LGBTQ+ community as a program of Perceptions, the precursor to the organization now known regionally as Great Lakes Bay Pride. Initially under the direction of Grace Marra, and now Jake Salisbury, the choir has grown to more than 50 members, including people from the LGBTQ+ community and their allies.
