(Atlantic) The Atlantic City Council Wednesday evening approved the PRN Status Police Officer Opening, Job Description and Compensation.

For the past two years, the Atlantic Police Department has struggled with the loss of senior officers, with staff levels reaching critical lows. City Administrator John Lund explained that PRN is a Latin term “Pro re NATA” which means “as the situation demands”. City Councilman Shawn Sarsfield said this position will provide relief to the officers that have remained.

It was noted that there has been interest from officers outside Atlantic in serving an occasional shift.

In other action, the City Council approved an order to close 6th Street between Poplar Street to Chestnut Street every Thursday from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. for Produce in the Park beginning June 1 through October 10.

The council approved the Collective Bargaining Agreement with the International Union of Operating Engineers. The City Public Works Department are members of the IUOE. The Union membership and IUOE passed the ratification vote for the Collective Bargaining Agreement for July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2027. The changes to the existing agreement includes articles regarding sick pay, seniority, retirement – sick leave disbursements, travel and meal policies, health insurance, clothing, wages, and other items. Wages reflect a 4% increase over the July 1, 2023 wages agreed upon in the MOU for that period.

The council approved an order to refer a request by Rob Stamp to the Planning and Zoning Commission to vacate a “phantom right-of-way” that begins at the corner of West 4th Street and Laurel Street, going westbound and terminating at the phantom railroad right-of-way.

The Council approved the Contract and Bonds for the Sunnyside Park Splash Pad Project. A contract was awarded to Henley Group LLC out of Muscatine on March 20th. Approving the contract and bonds is the final item needed for the project to commence.

And, the Council approved wages for seasonal/part-time Parks & Recreation and Airport Employees for the 2024 season.
