Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. , the reigning National League MVP, will undergo season-ending surgery after suffering "a complete tear of the ACL in his left knee," the Braves announced on their X account Sunday (May 26) night.

"OF Ronald Acuña Jr. tonight underwent an MRI that revealed a complete tear of the ACL in his left knee. He is set to undergo surgery at a date yet to be determined and will miss the remainder of the 2024 season," the Braves wrote.

Acuña, 26, left Sunday's win against the Pittsburgh Pirates shortly after hitting a double to right-center field and attempting to steal third base, at which point his left knee appeared to give out.

Acuña was on the ground for several minutes while receiving treatment before walking off the field on his own power. The outfielder was initially diagnosed with knee soreness before an MRI confirmed the complete ACL tear.

Acuña had previously torn his right ACL on July 20, 2021 and was seen wearing a brace in the Braves' clubhouse after Sunday's win, claiming his latest injury was less severe.

"(I) don't feel that painful, any pop or anything. ... Don't think it's that bad," Acuña said via ESPN .

Acuña was hitting for a .250 average with four home runs and 15 RBIs in 49 games during the 2024 MLB season.
