Atlanta Falcons bringing girls’ flag football to 20 high schools across Alabama

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — The Atlanta Falcons are bringing girls’ flag football teams to several high schools across Alabama, including three in the greater Birmingham area.

Through the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation, the Falcons will provide grants to 20 high schools in the state to start girls’ flag football teams. Specifically, in central Alabama, grants will be given to Montevallo High School, Mountain Brook High School and Pell City High School to start teams.

In 2021, the Alabama High School Athletic Association voted to sanction girls flag football as a recognized high school sport. The Falcons were involved in early discussions then to bring the sport to Alabama.

“After discussions with the Atlanta Falcons for several months, we are excited to be adding this girls’ sport for our membership,” AHSAA associate executive director Alvin Briggs said in a statement at the time . “We think it will grow rapidly.”

Since then, there have been three state championships for girls’ flag football in Alabama. Now, there are 112 schools statewide that now have their own teams.
