Trae Young on his favorite player to watch: "Steph... He's a guy who changed the game for players like me"

Between the ludicrous shooting range and the inexhaustible confidence, Trae Young will always be likened to future Hall of Famer Steph Curry . From the moment he entered the league as the fifth overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, the Atlanta Hawks guard popularly known as “Ice Trae” has mesmerized fans and opponents alike with his ball wizardry and three-point shooting prowess, leading his team to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021.
Currently in fan mode, after the Hawks failed to reach the postseason, the three-time All-Star shared on his podcast which player he loves to watch play. Here’s a hint: it’s someone Trae is often compared to.
Changed the game for good
When people talk about Steph, the phrase “changed the game” is almost always mentioned. More than just a marketing catchphrase, it is a testament to Curry’s impact on the sport, the league, and the players who have come after him. With his elite shooting ability and incredible ball-handling skills, Steph has transformed the game from being dominated by big men to one that values floor spacing, fast-paced offense, and long-range shots.
One player who has greatly benefited from how Steph has altered the way basketball is played is Trae, who has ensured the three-point revolution continues with his own brand of long-range sniping. It’s no surprise that the one-time All-NBA team member enjoys watching the Warriors guard play. Whether for entertainment purposes or to learn something, Trae regularly tunes in to watch the “Chef” cook on the hardcourt.
“I'm always excited to watch Steph. He's a guy who changed the game for players like me,” Trae said on the “From The Point Podcast by Trae Young.”
Kerr begs to differ
When discussing the parallels between Curry and Young, Steve Kerr, the coach of the Golden State Warriors , offers a distinct perspective on the subject. He says comparing the two is easy due to their unbelievable shooting abilities. However, Kerr stressed that the Hawks star plays more like Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic than Curry.
“I see more Luka with Trae, just in a smaller package. Luka’s obviously a big, massive wing and can see over the top of the defense and can bully his way through the paint, through defenders. But they have a very similar game in terms of, it’s going to be 50 high-screen and rolls, it’s going to be the ability to shoot a step-back three, to shoot a floater, get to the rim and pick you apart defensively,” Kerr shared .
Kerr makes a valid point, yet as Ice Trae solidifies his reputation with remarkable long-range shooting skills and game control, distancing his name from Steph's legacy will prove challenging. Nonetheless, this challenge presents a positive opportunity for the 25-year-old All-Star for the future.
