Ohio University and Hocking College to host Commencement ceremonies on May 4

Ohio University and Hocking College will host Commencement Ceremonies on May 4.

Ohio University

Ohio University will hold a commencement ceremony for graduates at 9:30 a.m. May 3.

Two ceremonies for undergraduates will be held on May 4. These ceremonies will be held at the Convocation Center, 95 Richland Ave., Athens.

At 9:30 a.m., a ceremony will be held for College of Fine Arts, College of Engineering and Technology, University College, Scripps College of Communication and College of Business. At 2 p.m., a ceremony will be held for Honors Tutorial College, Patton College of Education, College of Health Sciences and Professions and College of Arts and Sciences.

Ohio University alumnus Judge William T. Newman Jr. will deliver the keynote address for the undergraduate ceremonies.

Newman served as a Judge of the Commonwealth of Virginia’s 17th Judicial Circuit covering Arlington County and the City of Falls Church from 1993 through 2023. Upon his retirement in June of 2023, Newman became a certified mediator with the mediation firm the McCammon Group. He now mediates over civil matters over the entire Washington Metropolitan area.

In addition, Newman is an accomplished actor and is a member of Actor’s Equity and Screen Actors Guild — American Federation of Television and Radio Artist (SAG-AFTRA). He has appeared in numerous theatrical and cinematic productions across the United States –including New York, and the greater Washington Metropolitan Area.

In 2022, he was awarded an Ohio University Medal of Merit Award for his outstanding achievements and he was recently informed that has been selected to become a member of the Virginia Lawyers Weekly Hall of Fame Class of 2024.

Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine Commencement ceremony will be held May 11 at the Convocation Center.

The schedule includes:

May 9: 1 p.m., Grads on the Greens Golf Scramble; 5 p.m., Grads Gathering at Little Fish Brewing CompanyMay 10: 10:30 a.m., graduate rehearsal at Convocation Center; 1 p.m., Awards Ceremony at Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium; 4:30 p.m., Office of Inclusion Graduation CelebrationMay 11: 8:30 a.m., doors open at the Convocation Center; 9 a.m., graduates and mentors will assemble at Convocation Center; 10 a.m., Commencement ceremony begins

Heritage College alumnus Andrew Yuan, D.O. (‘87), will serve as speaker at the Heritage College’s 2024 Commencement ceremony.

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Dr. Yuan arrived in the United States at 10 years old with dreams of becoming a physician. That dream was brought to the brink of extinction following a life-altering accident in which he lost an arm and a leg. Dr. Yuan persevered, and ultimately, his physical challenges fueled his pursuit of a career in physiatry. Today, as a prominent osteopathic physiatrist in Fairfield, Connecticut, Dr. Yuan is known for transforming lives as he helps his patients overcome disability.

Hocking College

The Nelsonville college will host two Commencement Ceremonies on May 4in the student center, 3309 Hocking Parkway, Nelsonville.

The first ceremony, set for 9 a.m., will be for the Schools of Allied Health and Nursing and Workforce Development. The second ceremony, set for 11 a.m., will be for the Schools of General Studies, Arts and Science and Natural Resources/Public Safety.

Hocking College graduates and guests should arrive one hour before the ceremony begins. Each graduate can invite up to five guests to attend their ceremony.

All graduates are invited to attend a Graduation Pre-Party event prior to graduation. Food, games and a photo booth will be available. Graduates can pick up graduation caps and gowns at this event.

The pre-party will be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. May 1. Free lunch included.
