The Athens-Clarke County Unified Government and the Athens Downtown Development Authority hosted the annual Downtown Parade of Lights in Athens, Georgia, on Thursday, Dec. 7, 2023. The theme of this year's parade is “An Art Filled Holiday,” and marshaled by Harold Rittenberry Jr., a local artist known for his metal sculptures. The parade features more than 60 entries of groups that competed for prizes for their floats.

UGA receives multiyear grant to address obesity in Georgia
ATHENS -- The University of Georgia has been awarded $804,000 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to improve access to healthy foods and physical activity in Georgia counties with high rates of obesity. Two decades after being named an epidemic, high rates of obesity persist nationwide. In Georgia, one-third of adults are obese, and therefore, are at higher risk for a number of negative health outcomes: including heart disease, stroke, Type 2 diabetes, chronic pain and more. ...

UGA's Botanical Garden Program Equips Local Students with Workforce Skills
The State Botanical Garden of Georgia at the University of Georgia has been offering the Learning by Leading™ program since 2018. This program has equipped 171 students with skills needed for the workforce. It is designed to improve leadership skills through hands-on learning. Students acquire technical, human, and conceptual skills by working with staff mentors at the Botanical Garden. Cora Keber, the garden's education director, said the program aligns with the university's mission to prepare students for the green industry.
