Saginaw ISD Finalizes Contract with Union
Salary increases averaging 24.1 percent are part of a new three year contract between Saginaw Intermediate School District and United Steelworkers Local 9521. The union’s membership ratified the agreement, and the school board approved it October 7. It covers more than 200 employees, including paraprofessionals, behavior aides, health care aides, bus drivers, custodial and maintenance workers, secretaries, food service staff, and technology and finance support. The new pay structure sets more competitive starting wages and clearer paths for raises over an employee’s career. Workers with 20 or more years of continuous service will get an annual $500 longevity payment, and the deal keeps existing benefits and updates provisions for vacation and personal and family leave.

Standish-Sterling athletic director Steve Stodolak called Shepherd football coach Owen Russell on Oct. 2. Not to congratulate Russell on an impressive, hard-fought 34-28 win over Clare that night but to give the first-year coach a heads-up that Standish-Sterling might have to forfeit its Week 7 game. Standish-Sterling is having one of those seasons when a limited roster isn’t just keeping it from being competitive. It’s keeping the team from having enough healthy bodies to take the field. After a 60-0 loss to West Branch Ogemaw Heights, it likely would be too banged up to play the following week, on Oct. 9, at Shepherd. That was bad news. Shepherd (5-2) is enjoying one of its best seasons in years, highlighted by upset wins over Ogemaw Heights and Clare in Jack Pine Conference play. It wanted to keep that momentum rolling as it pushed for its first playoff berth since 2022. But more important? It was homecoming. So Russell immediately worked the phones, desperately trying to line up a replacement opponent in case Standish-Sterling canceled. Wednesday rolled around and, sure enough, Standish-Sterling had canceled. And Russell couldn’t find another team willing to make the trip to Shepherd. Game day was two days
