ASHEBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — An Asheboro teen was airlifted to a local hospital after a crash on US 64 in Asheboro, according to North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

At around 8:22 p.m. on Thursday, troopers came to the area of US 64 and Loflin Pond Road after getting a report of a crash.

Investigators say that a teen driver was driving south in the Dollar General parking lot in a 2011 Honda SUV while a 2020 Toyota pickup truck was driving west on US 64.

The teen tried to turn left onto US 64 from the parking lot and collided with the pickup truck.

“People run those lights when they are red all the time. I almost got hit by two vehicles who ran that light a few days ago,” said Chelsea, who works in the area.

The teen driver was severely injured and was airlifted to the hospital.

The driver of the pickup truck and a passenger were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Zachary Welch, who owns US64 Tire and Wheel, knows how dangerous this spot can be.

“It’s just wild. I’ve been here a year and four months, seen a lot of accidents,” Welch said.

On Friday morning, he heard the news about the crash that happened in front of his shop.

“I have a close friend, and he lives in the area. He stops by often, so he told me about it this morning,” Welch said.

The road was shut down for nearly two hours while emergency crews got to work.

“I can’t imagine what they are going through it is got to be a horrible thing. It is just unreal,” Welsch said.
