New to the Triangle: Lifestyle store in Durham, cakes in Apex and a Raleigh hotel

The Triangle is gaining new retail, dining and lodging options this fall and into 2027. From an Asian lifestyle retailer to a luxury Raleigh hotel, here’s a rundown of what’s arriving. Here are key takeaways: TESO Life , a national retailer specializing in Asian lifestyle goods , opened its Durham store at 14600 Durham Chapel Hill Blvd. on Oct. 31, with a Cary location planned at Crossroads shopping center. The company sells beauty products, toys, collectibles and household items, and plans to open 51 stores across 18 states by the end of 2026. Apex’s Beaver Creek Crossings has signed Jason’s Deli, Nothing Bundt Cakes and Avalon Nail Salon as new tenants for a development opening in the later half of 2027. The Jason’s Deli will feature a drive-thru — a first in the area — and Nothing Bundt Cakes will be the first of its kind for Apex. Oberlin Hotel , the Village District’s first lodging property, has opened at 501 Woodburn Road in Raleigh as part of Hilton’s Curio Collection. The 153-room hotel is named for the historic Oberlin Village and features a lobby bar called Proper, a coffee shop called Grounded and a rooftop restaurant called Wren set

Multiple coffee shops across Triangle will close or change in the coming months

On Monday, Nov. 2, a fire was reported at Village Coffeehouse in North Raleigh, prompting the business’ closure for until further notice, according to a post on the business’ social media . It’s the latest in a number of setbacks for coffee shops across the Triangle, which are experiencing struggles for a variety of reasons. In addition to the Village Coffeehouse fire, The Optimist Raleigh announced chapter 11 bankruptcy, Bad Brain Coffee Co. faces relocation and Parallax Coffee will close its Wendell location at the end of the year. On Monday, Oct. 26, Andrew Ward, owner of Optimist Raleigh, took to social media to share the news of the bankruptcy filing. “We will continue to operate normally going forward,” The Optimist said in a social media post. “Staff will be paid. Coffee and food will be served and nothing will change, especially in the interim. This process is just beginning, but the idea will always be to be here and protect this place and our staff.” In January 2025, The Optimist opened WRK by The Optimist on the first floor of North Hills’ The Exchange Raleigh before closing. Then Café Royale , a Parisian-inspired café and bar took over the

Why DEQ let a Raleigh real estate agent take over a troubled Wayne County hog farm

A Raleigh real estate agent with no hog farming experience bought a Wayne County farm infamous for a massive 2022 waste spill, and it has kept leaking sludge into public waterways. State regulators approved his permit to run the site without a background check and have little power beyond issuing fines, which the owner hasn’t paid. FULL STORY: Why DEQ trusted a Raleigh real estate agent with the site of a massive hog waste spill Here are key takeaways: Wallace Green, a Raleigh real estate agent operating as Biox Renewables — a one-person LLC with no website or office — bought the former White Oak Farms at auction in 2024 despite never having run such an operation. The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality does not perform background checks or require financial disclosures from applicants. Spokesperson Josh Kastrinsky said the only confirmation sought was that Green had a registered LLC. DEQ has fined Biox three times this year — $10,697 in May, $7,347 in August and $5,280 in September — but Green hasn’t paid any of them and insists he’s “in compliance.” He is also over a year behind on required reports. Samantha Krop of Sound Rivers said testing of runoff

Gas sales temporarily stopped at 15 Triangle stations. Here's where and why

State inspectors found issues with gas pumps at 15 Triangle stations, pausing sales to help protect consumers. Inspectors from the Standards Division of the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services visited dozens of stations across the Triangle area between Aug. 19 and Oct. 31, records obtained by The News & Observer show. Many of the pumps had no problems, but at a handful of stations in Wake, Durham and Johnston counties, inspectors found issues that could harm consumers. When that happens, inspectors “tag” pumps, meaning they are taken out of service until issues are resolved. Some of the inspections were routine, but visits to 19 stations were prompted by consumer complaints. Chad Parker, measurement manager with the Standards Division, previously told me that complaints tick up when gas prices rise. Prices have started to drop over the past month, after the law that paused the state’s collection of the motor fuels tax went into effect in early October. But in the months leading up to that, since the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran, gas has been expensive. Average prices for a gallon of regular gas in North Carolina increased from $3.72 Aug. 19 to $4.15 Sept. 19, before dropping to
