I-80 lane closures begin in Clinton County for joint repairs

Greene Township, Pa. — Joint-sealing work on Interstate 80 eastbound and westbound between mile markers 185 and 195 in Greene Township, Clinton County, bgean Monday, Nov. 2, PennDOT announced. The contractor will set up traffic control to close the left (passing) lane in both directions Monday, Nov. 2 and Tuesday, Nov. 3. Joint repairs will begin Wednesday, Nov. 4. PennDOT expects the contractor to finish the repairs and reopen all lanes before Thanksgiving, though schedules are subject to change because of weather or other circumstances. The work will improve ride quality and extend the service life of nearly 10 miles of I-80. All work is in Clinton County, but some work zone signage along the westbound lanes will be placed in Union County. Drivers are urged to use caution in work zones, obey posted speed limits and signage, avoid following trucks delivering material into the closed lane and always buckle up. The joint sealing is part of a larger project that will carry over into the 2027 construction season, when crews will do patching, surface preparation and apply a thin coat of material. Highway to honor Watsontown Vietnam War vet who made the ultimate sacrifice

Watsontown, Pa. — A Watsontown native who was killed in action in the Vietnam War will be memorialized with a highway in his hometown, according to State Rep. Michael Stender, R-Northumberland/Montour. Under Act 80 of 2026, a portion of Route 405 in Delaware Township and Watsontown Borough will be named the PFC Richard F. “Ricky” Ritter Memorial Highway, Stender announced. Ritter was 22 when he was killed, according to the release. “Ricky Ritter’s life was cut tragically short, but his sacrifice and story have made a lasting impact on Watsontown and Northumberland County,” Stender said. “Dedicating a highway in his honor will remind everyone driving through our communities that we are proud of our hometown heroes and their contributions to our great nation.” Ritter was born on Oct. 7, 1944. He grew up in Watsontown Borough and, after graduating from Warrior Run High School, entered the Marines. He was part of Company A, First Engineering Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, according to the release. He was killed on March 15, 1967, near Da Nang, Vietnam. Ritter received the Purple Heart posthumously.

Jersey Shore, Pa. — The Williamsport Detachment #388 of the Marine Corps League will hold its annual Marine Corps Birthday Ball Friday, Nov. 6, in Jersey Shore. This year’s ball marks the 251st birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps and will also recognize the nation’s 250th anniversary, according to the detachment. The event is set to take place at Bald Birds Brewing Company, 220 Shaffer Lane, from 5 to 10 p.m. Retired Master Sgt. Robert Mosley, USMC, will be the guest speaker. Entertainment will be by guest singers Kooper and Kash, featuring former Tiadaghton Queen Ava Musser. The evening will include catered dining, the reading of Gen. John A. Lejeune’s 1921 birthday message and the traditional cake cutting, in which the first pieces go to the guest of honor and the oldest and youngest Marines present. The Marine Corps traces its birthday to Nov. 10, 1775, when the Second Continental Congress, meeting in Philadelphia, passed a resolution establishing two battalions of Continental Marines. Four counties awarded funds to create outdoor rec plans

Lewisburg, Pa. — SEDA-COG will receive $187,100 in grants to prepare a multi-county greenway plan for Columbia, Montour, Northumberland, and Snyder counties. Mount Carmel Borough in Northumberland County will receive $19,500. Community Conservation Partnerships Program (C2P2) grants, funded by the state departments of Conservation and Natural Resources and Community and Economic Development, are meant to fund projects that help communities improve parks and playgrounds, build and repair trails, conserve open space, restore rivers and watersheds, and grow local economies through outdoor recreation. Mount Carmel Borough will use its grant to prepare a master site development plan for the quarter-acre Oak Street Park, which will establish a framework for the site’s future development as a neighborhood recreation and gathering space. The plan will include an electronic written report and site development drawing. Supported by SEDA-COG, the borough’s planning effort will help it evaluate community needs, establish design priorities, and prepare for future funding opportunities. Defense calls Lycoming DA 'racist' in bid to block death penalty

Williamsport, Pa. — During a pretrial hearing Thursday in the capital murder case against accused murderer Troy Bennett Bailey, his attorney doubled down on arguments calling Lycoming County District Attorney Tom Marino a racist as the defense sought to remove the death penalty. The hearing before President Judge Eric R. Linhardt addressed several motions filed by Bailey’s public defender, Jeana Longo. Those included a request to remove the death penalty, to obtain recordings from the Lycoming County Prison, and a request for the layout of the prison. The prison requests involve Bailey's alleged co-conspirator Muhammad Davis, who was lodged in Lycoming County Prison before being transferred to state prison on unrelated charges. Both men are accused in the plot to kidnap and kill Bailey's ex-girlfriend and her co-worker in 2024. The defense claims Davis admitted he was the shooter to another prisoner via the plumbing pipes that run throughout the facility.
