Urine smell, bugs in liquor, old foods & more at Wichita KS restaurants, hotels

Urine odor in a stairwell, bugs in liquor, insects around food equipment, stained and torn bedding, old meat and milk, exposed carpet nails, smoke detectors that didn’t work, expired medication for sale and more are among violations state inspectors discovered during recent food safety and lodging inspections in the Wichita area. Each week, The Eagle adds to its searchable database of failed inspections from Sedgwick County. Seven restaurants, hotels and other businesses were non-compliant with state regulations Oct. 25-31. Inspectors found few or no violations that week at more than 30 other locations deemed compliant with food safety and lodging rules. Kansas Department of Agriculture inspections are meant to protect the public from foodborne illnesses and other health risks. Locations can fail if they have too many problems, certain types of violations or issues that can’t be fixed right away. Violations are common. Most of the time, they’re corrected in front of an inspector. Examples of things that can be addressed immediately include serving food that’s more than a week old, employees mishandling ingredients and dirty kitchens. Issues that may take longer to correct include pest infestations, power outages and plumbing problems. It’s rare, but a business may be temporarily

The latest on the two closed locations of Tropical Smoothie Cafe in Wichita

About a month ago, two of Wichita’s three Tropical Smoothie Cafes abruptly closed : The franchisee of the stores at 2768 N. Maize Road and at 9730 E. 21st St. sold them, and the new franchisee wanted time to do some renovations. But those two cafes will soon reopen, said new owner Aaron Toutloian. He’s aiming for Nov. 18. Toutlioan, who lives in Florida and owns 10 other Tropical Smoothie Cafes across the Midwest, said that because of equipment delays, he wasn’t actually able to make the kitchen upgrades he’d planned. “So we’ve decided to go ahead and open and just do the changes as we start getting the equipment,” he said. The stores will remain open, even while the equipment is being installed. Toutlioan said he’s been with the Tropical Smoothie Cafe chain since 2019 and originally bought franchises in Florida with his brother. Then the two decided to each run their own stores, Toutlioan said, and his brother still has 25 stores in Florida. Toutlioan, who is originally from St. Louis, said his stores are spread between Indiana and Kansas. His closest locations to Wichita are in Pittsburg and in Columbia, Missouri. In fact, he said, he’s considering

Wichita just passed a $615M school bond. Here's what it means for your tax bill

Wichita voters on Tuesday, Nov. 3, approved a $615 million school bond issue for the state’s largest district, with 62% backing the first question and 60% supporting the second. The two propositions will fund new schools, trades training and renovations — but will add to homeowners’ property tax bills for years to come. Here are key takeaways: Supporters celebrated after both bond questions cleared , with Vote Yes Yes committee chair Luis Rodriguez saying, “Tonight, we learned that we have a path forward,” while opposition leader Walt Chappell of the Improve Learning First coalition said his side was outspent and that “closing schools and building new ones helps contractors make money but it doesn’t increase our students’ proficiency.” The bond will pay for new schools, trades training and renovations across the district. The approved bond carries a property tax rate of 7.68 mills — 5.5 mills for Proposition 1 and 2.18 mills for Proposition 2 — meaning the owner of a $200,000 home will pay an estimated extra $3,532.80 to $5,185.58 in property taxes over 20 years , with annual costs starting at $176.64 and potentially climbing to $353.28 if home values follow historical trends. The summary points above were
