Local middle school wins $1,000 in National Science Bowl

Officials with the Department of Energy National Science Bowl® announced that Bonham Middle School will finish the competition in the top 16 at the National Finals earning their science department $1,000.

Middle school teams in 3rd through 16th place not in order include:

• Davis Drive Middle School, Cary, North Carolina
• Glascow Middle School, Baton Rouge, Louisiana
• Irving A. Robbins Middle School, Farmington, Connecticut
• Fort Settlement Middle School, Sugar Land, Texas
• Stallings Island Middle School, Martinez, Georgia
• Sycamore Middle School, Indianapolis, Indiana
• Miller Middle School, San Jose, California
• Diamond Middle School, Lexington, Massachusetts
• Lincoln Middle School, Pullman, Washington
• Hunter College Campus Middle School, New York, New York
• Robert Frost Middle School, Rockville, Maryland
• BASIS Independent McLean, McLean, Virginia
• Bonham Middle School, Amarillo, Texas
• Minnetonka Middle School East, Minnetonka, Minnesota

The final two teams remaining in the competition are Hopkins Jr. High School out of Fremont, California and BASIS Independent Bellevue out of Bellevue, Washington. These two team will face each other for the championship title on Monday.

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — Officials with the Department of Energy (DOE) announced that Amarillo’s Bonham Middle School are National Finalist to compete for the National Science Bowl® scheduled on April 29 in Washington, D.C.

Officials said BMS will compete in the middle school finals all day Saturday and the two final teams from today will compete for the championship title on Monday.

“I am delighted to announce the start of the 34th National Science Bowl® Finals,” said DOE Office of Science Acting Director, Dr. Harriet Kung. “As some of our nation’s brightest young minds come together, we bear witness to the future of science and innovation. May the competition be as exhilarating as it is challenging for these architects of tomorrow’s world.”

The competition began in January with 115 high school and middle school teams for a chance to attend the National Finals. DOE said the top 67 high schools and the top 48 middle school teams will compete in an academic competition for a chance to become new National Champions.

The release explained that each academic competition, consisted of, “Teams students engaging in a rapid question and answer series, addressing questions from across multiple science and math disciplines.”

Officials said the top two middle and high school teams can become National Champions and will also be awarded $5,000 for their schools’ math and science departments. Schools who finish in the top 16 in the National Finals will win $1,000 for their schools’ science departments.

DOE added that middle school teams will participate in a cyber science competition on Sunday April 28, led by computer scientists from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

This competition aims to encourage students to excel in mathematics and science and to pursue careers in these fields according to DOE.
