ALTOONA, Pa. (WTAJ) — The Central Pennsylvania Humane Society announced Monday they are unable to accept any strays or owner-surrendered large dogs.

According to a Facebook post by the humane society, they currently have 22 dogs in the kennel ready for adoption. Of those dogs, 19 are unclaimed strays dating back to 2022.

The dogs can’t live with other animals, which is why it’s taking longer for them to be adopted. The humane society said that at this point they “simply can’t accept any kennel sized dogs until some of these dogs are adopted.”

“When you take an animal on, it’s a lifetime commitment. We’re a rescue, but animals have to be adopted out for us to be able to help for more animals to come in. And it’s just a very serious situation right now, and every rescue is in the same boat as us,” Becky Felton, on behalf of the Central PA Humane Society said.

The society said due to state laws, they must provide the correct square footage of space regarding the animal size.

The humane society added that they’re also at capacity with cats, having well over 100 of them in their care.

They’re currently looking for both fosters and adopters for the animals in their care. You can read more about adopting and fostering on the Central Pa Humane Society’s website .
