Amazon opens first Upper Peninsula facility in Escanaba
ESCANABA, Mich. (WBUP/WJMN) — Amazon celebrated the grand opening of its first Upper Peninsula delivery station in Escanaba, marking a significant expansion that brings faster shipping to the region. The 50,000-square-foot facility launched operations on October 8 and has already reduced delivery times from seven to eight days to just two days for Upper Peninsula customers. The station currently employs more than 50 associates, with plans to double that number in the coming weeks. Approximately 50 delivery drivers also operate from the facility, and Amazon continues hiring ahead of the holiday season. "For a region where distance is simply a fact of life, Amazon's investment in Escanaba helps bring the final link in the supply chain closer to the people of the Upper Peninsula," said Michigan State Senator Ed McBroom, 38th Senate District. "I am grateful for the commitment they've made to connect our communities to critical products and services." The Escanaba station is part of Amazon's $4 billion investment in rural America to create more than 100,000 jobs and bring faster shipping to 13,000 zip codes nationwide. Amazon now operates six delivery stations in rural Michigan communities, including Escanaba, Traverse City, Gaylord, Saginaw, Clare, and Bad Axe. "We're proud

Negaunee fires treasurer for over-use of leave, insubordination with city manager
NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WJMN/WBUP) — City leaders in Negaunee voted 5-2 against ending the suspension of long-time treasurer Brian Downing, effectively firing him Wednesday night. Last week, news of Downing's suspension, which had started Oct. 2, was publicized. In conversation with My UP News , Downing said the core of the issue involved his allegations of fraud against City Manager Nate Heffron. In particular, Downing cited a troubling 2024 audit of city finances, which found errors in the budget's reconciliation process — meaning a number of expenses and line items were not properly accounted for or adjusted throughout the year. "[The auditors] said the lack of reconciliation could be due to error or fraud. They didn't specifically say which part they believed it was. After a little bit of investigation, I believe that it's the fraud part," said Downing. Wednesday night, the city attorney clarified Downing's suspension was due to a depletion of his time-off and FMLA leave, along with a press release Downing prepared which incorrectly claimed Heffron was no longer the city manager. According to Downing, that was stated because he did not want to be implicated in the wrongdoing he alleged of the city manager, and therefore no
