2 Florida men arrested in Alpena Co. for Home Depot crime spree
ALPENA COUNTY — Two men were arrested on charges of stealing almost $40,000 in goods from mostly Home Depot stores, the Alpena County Sheriff’s Office said Monday. On June 1 at 3:10 p.m., the Home Depot in Alpena reported two males stole a large amount of power tools by leaving the store without paying. Home Depot had an employee follow the men’s vehicle from Florida west on M-32 until it reached the area of Indian Reserve Road, deputies said. The employee then discontinued trailing the car, and officers from the Alpena County Sheriff’s Office and the Michigan State Police searched the area, deputies said. A sergeant with the Alpena County Sheriff’s office located the vehicle on M-32 near Jacks Landing Road in Green Township and pulled it over, deputies said.

The New Sunrise Senior Center Being Constructed in Lincoln
A new senior center is being constructed in Lincoln. “We’re building a community center slash senior center. It will have a large gym that will have basketball, pickleball and volleyball,” Construction Manager Andy Shaw said. The Alcona County Commission on Aging received a grant to build the Sunrise Center, and construction is in progress. “As you enter, we’ll have a big, beautiful entrance for the fireplace. It’s going to be just really comfortable and hopefully very inviting. So, they’ll have a brand-new kitchen and dining area. They can have events and then a whole new office area for the ACC,” said Shaw.

City crews to pick up bagged grass & brush next week
For the second time this season, crews for the City of Alpena will be picking up bagged grass, bagged yard waste and brush curbside next week. As previously reported, the city no longer schedules particular areas on specific days. That means all residents must have their bagged materials and brush curbside no later than Monday at 6 a.m.
Three Leadership Seats are Currently Open in Alpena
There are three separate seats coming available in Alpena. There are two council members seats available as well as the upcoming mayoral election. “The county commissioners’ race is partizan, so they will have candidates appearing on the August ballot. The city candidates are nonpartisan, so therefore they do not appear on the August ballot and instead just jump right to the November ballot,” Alpena City Clerk, Anna Soik said. Although the election is not until November, the deadline to petition is right around the corner.

Lawrence Marvin Villeme, 80, of Alpena passed away Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at Medilodge of Hillman. Lawrence was born August 27, 1943, in Capac, Michigan to the late Louis and Helen (Brown) Villeme. He served in the United States Air Force, Marine Corp, and Air National Guard. On February 12, 1995, he married June Taylor. Lawrence was a member of DAV, VFW, Eagles, and American Legion. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
New Student Housing at Alpena Community College to Help Alleviate Strain on Current Housing Situation
The housing market in Alpena is so tight that new college housing at Alpena Community College will alleviate some of the strain on the community. “ACC has student housing and we’ve had it for many years. It’s been full to capacity. Demand exceeds the supply of housing we have, which we found limits enrollment. Our plan is to increase student housing on campus by 50 percent or 64 beds we have and add another 32, which would give us 96 beds,” Alpena Community College President Dr. Donald MacMaster said.

New York men rescued after boat bottoms out in Lake Huron, around Black River
A 63 year-old man and his 85 year-old father were rescued from their sinking boat Tuesday, as they were cruising north along the Lake Huron coastline, in Black River. Deputies with the Alcona County Sheriff’s Office arrived on scene first, shortly after 11 a.m., and were able to get one of the men off the 43-foot boat. The U.S. Coast Guard arrived and was able to safely rescue the second man. No one was injured.
Donna Tucker Badder
Donna Tucker Badder, 82, of Hubbard Lake passed away Tuesday, May 28, 2024. Donna Leschinger was born April 4, 1942, in Dearborn to the late Alexander and Dora (Nissel) Leschinger. Donna graduated from Alpena High School on a Friday in 1960 and went to work for Besser Company on the following Monday for 38 years. She married William (Bill) Tucker on August 19, 1961. Bill passed away on July 1, 1991. After grieving the loss of her first husband, Donna found happiness with her second husband Richard Badder. Richard and Donna were married on November 6, 1993. He passed away on December 12, 2013. Donna loved being with her kids and grandkids and attending their sporting events. She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church and enjoyed gardening and puzzles (jigsaw, sudoku). Donna was known as the “pie lady” and for bringing several to each family dinner.
