Galesburg student named National Merit Commended
A Galesburg High School student has earned national recognition for academic achievement after being named a Commended Student in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program. The honor was awarded to senior Emily Edwards, according to a community announcement from Galesburg Community Unit School District 205. The recognition is based on Edwards' performance on the 2025 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, known as the PSAT/NMSQT. The National Merit Scholarship Corp. recognizes Commended Students for outstanding academic promise. About 34,000 students across the country are receiving the designation through the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program. Although Commended Students do not advance in the competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, the designation places them among a select group of academically accomplished students nationwide. Principal Jeff Ewing praised Edwards for the achievement. “Emily’s recognition is a tremendous accomplishment and a reflection of her commitment to academic excellence,” Ewing said. “We are incredibly proud of Emily and the hard work she has put into her education. This is a well-deserved honor, and we are excited to celebrate this achievement with her and her family.” National recognition for academic achievement District officials encouraged the community to join in recognizing Edwards for earning Commended Student status
