Downtown Springfield restaurant voted as most romantic in the city
SPRINGFIELD -- Maldaner's Restaurant owner and chef Michael Higgins said he has seen his share of wedding proposals at the downtown Springfield establishment. More: Is steak still on the menu? Fine dining industry changing amid rising costs "We can see three generations in here sometimes," said Higgins, who bought the restaurant at Sixth and Monroe streets with his late wife Nancy in 1994. "It makes you feel glad that you're part of the history (with these families) and you're part of the history of Springfield and that's truthful, too." Maldaner's, which has been part of the city's landscape since 1884, was voted Springfield's most romantic restaurant in a State Journal-Register online poll last week. Maldaner's won with 22% of the vote, outdistancing PAO Bistro (18%), VELE (11%), Bella Milano (7%) and Old Luxemburg Inn (7%). Nearly 650 votes were cast. There were 20 restaurants in the poll. Higgins said the restaurant won't do a special menu, but diners can expect black truffles rolled in coffee as a treat
