Report: The Salvation Army in Albert Lea would like to thank the Kenneth W. Olson Foundation of the Freeborn County Communities Foundation for its generous grant donation. The organization said it is fortunate to be able to apply for this grant each year.

In the past, one of the highlights was purchasing and installing a dumbwaiter for the food pantry using funds received from the foundation. The dumbwaiter is a blessing to pantry participants, volunteers and staff, enabling easier removal of food boxes — no more strain on the body carrying food boxes up/down the stairs. A common statement from participants is, “I love this thing.”

In 2023, the Salvation Army received funds for its emergency social services and children’s programming. The organization was able to provide Freeborn County residents with emergency social service assistance, including utility, rent, bus tickets and gas vouchers. Funds for the children’s programs help provide camp assessments, Vacation Bible school, archery camp and youth program supplies.

The food pantry is open Monday through Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. On average, the organization serves 20 participants each day. The meal program (sack lunches) is open Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., averaging 70 each day. “Our community is so fortunate to have donors, like Kenneth W. Olson, who love their community and want to care for it into the future even after they are gone. We feel privileged to be able to help others through foundation donors,” the report states.
