Austin Packers boys hockey team rallies for 6-5 OT win over Faribault in home opener
The Austin Packers boys hockey team played host to the Faribault Falcons in a Big 9 Conference matchup for their home opener for the 2023-2024 season at Riverside Arena Thursday evening, and in a game that saw the two teams combine to commit 22 penalties for a total of 59 minutes, Austin’s Gahvin Schaefer capped a Packer comeback from a 4-1 deficit with a goal in overtime to push Austin to a dramatic 6-5 win.

The Lyle/Pacelli Athletics boys basketball team, coming off a 23-win season and a Southeast Conference West Division championship in 2022-2023 opened a new season at All Saints Arena at Pacelli Catholic Schools in Austin Thursday evening versus conference foe Grand Meadow, and it was the Athletics rolling to a 74-32 win.

Flanders, a sophomore defenseman tallied an unassisted power-play goal at 3:57 of overtime to lift Austin to a thrilling 4-3 win in Windom versus the Eagles in their season opener Monday evening, and Schaefer, a sophomore forward scored at the six-minute mark of overtime in the squad’s home opener versus Faribault Thursday night to help the Packers rally from a 4-1 deficit after one period of play to win in the extra session for the second game in a row by the score of 6-5.
