Why an Oregon high school football player was ejected from rivalry game before kickoff
A situation that transpired before an Oregon high school football game on Friday, Oct. 16, led to one player being ejected before kickoff even happened. The situation transpired at Jefferson High School (OR) as visiting Grant players ran out onto the field for the team's entrance. As the Generals ran onto the field, video shows a Jefferson player coming out and violently shoving a Grant player that was carrying the American flag. That player got up and went to confront the Jefferson player before being separated while the rest of his teammates went to their respective sideline. Portland-area new station KATU reported on the situation, noting the Oregon School Activities Association said the player was ejected due to the conduct. In a statement to the news station, the OSAA stated that "Rivalry game or not, there's no place for this behavior before, during or after a game." While the OSAA does not comment on any disciplinary measures for situations such as that, an ejection typically leads to an athlete being removed from that game and suspended for the next game as well. That athlete is also typically required to complete a sportsmanship course. Portland Public Schools also sent a statement

Salem-Keizer school closures: Board faces December decision
Salem-Keizer school board members are facing a difficult decision that could affect six elementary schools across the district. At Tuesday night’s meeting, board members spent more than an hour discussing the proposed closures, asking district officials questions about the plan and the reasons behind it. The schools being considered are Brush College, Candalaria, Liberty, Englewood, Richmond and Cummings Elementary in Keizer. District officials say aging buildings, poor facility conditions and declining enrollment are driving the proposal. Enrollment has fallen from nearly 42-thousand students in 2017 to about 37-thousand last school year. The Salem Reporter says the board is expected to make a final decision in December, with closures proposed for June 2027.

What Salem-Keizer parents, board members said about proposed closures
More than 40 parents, students, and community members spoke at an Oct. 20 Salem-Keizer Public Schools board meeting, again opposing a proposal to close six elementary schools. It was the second public meeting centered on a proposal released Oct. 9 . The district is proposing to close Brush College, Candalaria, Cummings, Englewood, Liberty, and Richmond ahead of fall 2027. The closures would be the first in the district since 2012, when the school board passed a resolution to move Middle Grove Elementary students to Chavez Elementary and repurpose Middle Grove. While district officials said the plan to close six elementary schools is "unavoidable" amid declining enrollment, community members have strongly opposed it during lengthy board meetings. Parents have shown up in school colors and gear to fiercely defend their schools, and they've gathered hundreds of petition signatures in hopes of keeping them off the chopping block. They've also lobbied other local elected leaders. Candalaria parents told the Statesman Journal they were meeting with Sen. Deb Patterson, D-Salem, and Rep. Tom Andersen, D-Salem, on Oct. 21. And on Oct. 28, other parents plan to gather at the state Capitol to rally for alternative solutions. Here are three takeaways from the Oct.

Deb Patterson, D-Salem,spoke out on Oct. 19 and 20 against a proposal to close six elementary schools across Salem-Keizer Public Schools. They are important parts of their neighborhoods, bringing families together and providing students with a place to learn, grow, and build lasting connections,” said Mannix in a statement. “I will roll up my sleeves and work with the Salem-Keizer School District, parents, and community members to find solutions that will help keep Cummings and Englewood Elementary open.” SKPS on Oct. 9 announced a plan to close Brush College, Candalaria, Cummings, Englewood, Liberty, and Richmond. School officials described the closures as unavoidable, as enrollment continues to decline in the district. Community members slammed the proposed closures during a school board meeting days later.
