ALBANY, N.Y. ( NEWS10 ) — Happy Monday and happy Earth Day! According to Meteorologist Matt Mackie, today’s temperatures could get up to the high 50s after a chillier start with little cloud coverage throughout the day.

Former Albany Fire Chief James Larson’s funeral will be on Monday at Mater Christi Church at 10:30 a.m. Also, state lawmakers have passed the 2024-2025 state budget. It now heads to Gov. Kathy Hochul’s desk to be approved. A child found unresponsive at Great Escape Lodge, Albany Rail Trail closure, and a Grafton mine manager pleading guilty to manslaughter in a worker’s death are all covered in your five things to know this Monday morning.

1. Former Albany Fire Department Chief passes away

Former Albany Fire Department Chief James Larson died last week and his funeral will take place on Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Mater Christi Church. Larson was appointed chief in November 1986 and led the department from December 1987 to November 2000.

2. New York State lawmakers pass 2024-2025 budget

New York lawmakers have passed the 2024-2025 state budget. The State Assembly and Senate enacted the nearly $237 billion spending plan after final deliberations on numerous state bills on Saturday. The budget heads to the desk of Governor Kathy Hochul to be approved.

3. Child rescued while swimming at Great Escape Lodge Water Park

A 5-year-old was found unresponsive at the Great Escape Lodge Water Park on Saturday. The Warren County Sheriff’s Office says the child was taken to Albany Hospital via Life Net and is in stable condition.

4. Albany Rail Trail to close for bridge rehab

Part of the Albany County Rail Trail will be closed starting Monday until Tuesday, April 30. Near the Bender Melon Farm Preserve Bridge between Hilton Road and Upper Font Grove Road will be closed, per the Albany County Department of Public Works.

5. Mine manager pleads guilty to second-degree manslaughter

A mine manager pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter on Friday in the death of Darren Miller in October 2022. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Anthony Valente admitted to causing Miller’s death by recklessly disregarding and overriding the safety features of a crane that broke and struck Miller.
