80-bed recovery center closes at Massillon health hub after 8 months

MASSILLON – A drug and alcohol recovery center operated by Ohio Valley Physicians Health has closed after about nine months inside a revamped health hub. The 80-bed addiction recovery facility opened in February at the Massillon Community Health & Innovation Center , 870 Amherst Road NE, which is the former site of Affinity Medical Center. It shut its doors on Oct. 16 due to apparent medical reimbursement shortfalls. Chris Zimmerman, chief executive officer of Massillon Community Health, said he's working on "a viable replacement" to occupy the former recovery center's space, adding that the process has been encouraging. A phone message left with a representative from OVP on Oct. 28 was not immediately returned. The recovery center was expected to bring in dozens of long-term jobs to Massillon, said Jackie Rebman, director of inpatient behavioral health for OVP, told The Independent in late February. Between $500,000 and $1 million of renovations had been made in preparation for the two-floor, rehab center in early 2026. SRMC nurse nets 10th DAISY Award for care

Salem Regional Medical Center has awarded its 10 th DAISY Award, which recognizes outstanding nurses across the country who go above and beyond in providing compassionate care. Richelle Shetler, inpatient unit director of the hospital’s Tower 2 and ICU, received the award, which is the hospital’s 10 th since the program began in 2024. She was nominated by a co-worker. "Richelle always puts the patient first. She is a great listener and finds solutions to problems. Her caring attitude is infectious,” the nomination said. Leigh Knife, the director of nursing at SRMC, said Shetler works to protect patients throughout their care journey. “Richelle perfectly embodies our hospital’s commitment to excellence through her outstanding leadership and skills,” Knife said. “Her kindness and compassion make a meaningful difference for our patients, and we are truly grateful to have her as a member of our nursing team.” Shetler received a special certificate and a $100 award given on behalf of the George Kimble Scholarship, which was established in 2012 in memory of past SRMC patient George H. State nurses administer over 10K measles vaccine doses amidst outbreak

Harrisburg, Pa. — Measles has now spread to 43 Pennsylvania counties, with 1,317 confirmed cases so far this year, the state Department of Health (DOH) announced Friday. Washington County is the latest addition to the list of counties with confirmed cases. The department reported 31 new cases since Oct. 19. The northcentral region's counties hit especially hard by the spread of measles include Centre, Clinton, Northumberland, Snyder, and Union counties, according to the DOH's measles dashboard . Cumulatively, these counties have counted 151 cases. Snyder County alone reported 50. Since the outbreak began, 251 people have been hospitalized and five deaths have been confirmed as measles-related, according to the DOH. Four of the confirmed cases, less than 1%, involved vaccinated people. Vaccination demand surges DOH nurses have administered more than 10,000 doses of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine this year between pop-up clinics and state health centers. That includes more than 6,300 doses given at 223 pop-up clinics held in affected communities since the outbreak began in late April. About 300 DOH staff members are working with residents, community organizations, and health care providers on the response, and dozens more clinics are planned in the coming weeks and
