A former Boise City Council member has been nominated by President Joe Biden to join the Amtrak Board of Directors.

Elaine Clegg, CEO of Valley Regional Transit, received the honor, VRT announced in a news release. VRT has provided regional public transportation for Ada and Canyon counties for over 20 years, operating 22 bus routes in the two counties, and servicing everywhere from Eagle to Caldwell. As CEO, Clegg works on the transit’s bus network, updated infrastructure and new services.

”We are thrilled to see Elaine recognized for her exceptional leadership and passion for public transit,” Jarom Wagoner, Caldwell mayor and chair of the VRT board of directors, said in the release. “Her nomination to the Amtrak Board of Directors is a testament to her innovative thinking and tireless advocacy for improving transportation options for this region.”

The Amtrak Board of Directors consists of six individuals nominated to serve by the president and confirmed by the U.S. Senate. Board members typically serve a five-year term, according to a release. Clegg’s nomination is currently awaiting Senate confirmation.

”I am deeply honored to be given this opportunity by the Biden-Harris administration to join the Amtrak Board of Directors and contribute to the advancement of rail transportation in our country,” Clegg said in the release. “I look forward to working alongside my colleagues to ensure Amtrak continues to serve the needs of passengers and communities across America. It is especially exciting to have a chance to serve at this time as passenger rail is making a comeback and to represent the West as it seeks rail expansion.”

Clegg and VRT did not respond to requests for additional comment by press time.
