Downtown Billings housing: a humble mid-rise is still a start.
Most American cities, large and small, have experienced such a revitalization of their downtowns since the year 1990 that they’re basically unrecognizable. Districts formerly presented one carless corridor after another, with panoplies of edifices groaning from varying levels of neglect and decay. Most of them today have considerably more going on than they did 35 years ago. The contemporary downtown may simply offer an array of dining and entertainment options, so that the evening activity complements the daytime service-sector office jobs (the latter never fully departed most downtowns). Then again, that same downtown may also feature countless residences in multifamily buildings (apartments and condominiums), so that workers can walk from the office to happy hour and dinner and then their homes. Simply put, even if the first few years of COVID-related business closures imposed some serious setbacks upon which many central business districts are still recovering, few if any downtowns are in worse shape than they were in back then. Though I lack the experience to forge a before/after comparison, I’d argue the same for downtown Billings. The largest city in Montana has restaurants and hotels downtown, and, through a brief visit last spring, I espied downtown Billings housing.
