Preparing For Changes At Farmers Markets This Season
It’s time for the return of area farm markets. At some it’s business as usual, at others change is in the air -- while a couple are brand new. In Traverse City, construction on Grandview Parkway is pushing the Sara Hardy Farmers Market to relocate for most of the season. During the National Cherry Festival, it will be at the Old Town Parking Deck. Post-festival, the market will move to Rotary Square at the corner of Union and State streets through October.

Neighbors speak out against Northwestern Michigan College’s plans to develop property
TRAVERSE CITY — Northwestern Michigan College is working on their 10-year master plan, which includes looking at what they can do with a 55-acre plot of land that’s located close to the school. The college is thinking about developing the property, but some people in the neighborhood concerned with that idea have started a group to oppose it. The group, called ‘Neighbors for Nature’ said the land should be environmentally protected. Kim Grabowski, a member of the group, said they’re also calling for more transparency from the school. “We are willing to work with them. We would like them to get community involvement. It is a community college, and we would like more community input. But at this point, it feels like they’re just checking off boxes and saying, ‘Yep, we’ve had those meetings. Yep. We’ve done a survey,’” said Grabowski.

Suttons Bay Snags Marina Grants
The marina and associated waterfront in Suttons Bay are set to get some significant improvements thanks to a pair of state grants. Suttons Bay Village Manager Rob Larrea says the village recently was informed that its application for two grants totaling roughly $860,000 from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ Waterways Program were approved.
New Tasting Room, City Budget, Traverse Connect/Brown Bridge/DDA Contracts on Commission Agenda
Traverse City commissioners will vote tonight (Monday) on approving a liquor license for a planned new tasting room on West Front Street from Petoskey’s High Five Spirits. Commissioners will also hold a public hearing on the city’s proposed 2024-25 budget and vote on contracts with Traverse Connect for economic development services and the Grand Traverse Conservation District to manage Brown Bridge Quiet Area, as well as terminating an agreement with the TC Downtown Development Authority for parking services.
FishPass Construction Begins Tuesday
Construction on the new FishPass system at the Union Street Dam site will begin Tuesday (May 21) in downtown Traverse City. Initial work will include fencing installation by contactor Spence Brothers and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, requiring the lower parking lot (Lot J) by the dam to be closed. Parking there will be inaccessible for the duration of the project.
