ABILENE, Texas ( KTAB/KRBC ) – A female suspect was shot and killed by officers during an overnight standoff in Abilene.

Police say the suspect, who has only been identified as a 44-year-old female, initially barricaded herself inside a home on the 1000 block of Grape Street around 9:00 p.m. Monday.

Members of the SWAT team surrounded the home after someone called 9-1-1 and reported the suspect had fired a shot at her family member.

Negotiations with this suspect took several hours. Police say the standoff ended when the suspect opened the door and fired shots at officers, prompting them to return fire, striking her at least one time.

This suspect was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting, and her next-of-kin has not been notified.

One officer has been placed on mandatory leave as the Texas Rangers investigate this fatal shooting, and no other injuries have been reported.

No further information has been released.
