On Wednesday morning, Texas Governor Greg Abbott bussed more migrants to Chicago. The city welcomed 32 migrants - the total number of migrants is now 3,716 who have arrived to the windy city since September.

Chicago released the following statement:

“We have a responsibility to provide shelter, food, and medical care for each individual and family – many of whom walked hundreds of miles, navigating great danger through multiple countries, in pursuit of safety and opportunity in the United States. Illinois is a welcoming state. We are committed to assisting each family and individual, providing human services with respect and dignity.”

Organizations in Chicago are working to help the newly arrived people to the city.

Veronica Castro runs the Illinois Coalition for Refugees and Rights. She said most families will not be able to work for six months and this is a problem for them to find permanent shelter.

She said:

“We know folks are going to be in this asylum process for years. The plan is to get people in housing within a short period of time. There are folks that are moving, but it’s the exception not the rule.”

The City of Chicago is also asking for donations and volunteers to assist with the migrants once they arrive. They established a website where you can make a donation or volunteer. On this form, you can fill out your information to volunteer.

Yesterday, the Salvation Army provided dinner to migrants for their first Thanksgiving meal at the Salvation Army Freedom Center on Christina Ave in Humboldt Park.

Since the arrival of migrants started in September, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot has not been pleased with Governor Abbott. She previously called Abbott unpatriotic.

How do you think Chicago is supporting migrants who can’t work?
