Lambertville's Lunchroom makes great use of location
When they say location, location, location, they usually don’t mean rural Michigan, but the Schoolhouse Lunchroom at Olde Schoolhouse Commons in Lambertville makes the absolute most of its charming country locale. The diner is in what used to be the gymnasium of a country schoolhouse. The building itself is more than 100 years old, but it has been completely refurbished with some office spaces and small storefronts both upstairs and down. There’s even a historical marker noting that the school bus safety mirror was invented right there. It’s a charming spot, with fun, kitschy theming throughout: a screen door leads...

To the editor: Secor roundabout bad idea
I’ve seen questionable roadway projects before, but the proposed roundabout, or as I call it, “roundingdoubt,” at Secor Road and Kenwood Boulevard, is one of the dumbest. It is touted to improve safety at the intersection, but anyone I’ve spoken with says these traffic circles are very confusing and actually invited chance accidents, not deter them. In addition, roundabouts are not attractive and require taking a portion of resident properties. They look like a fried egg as shown in an overhead photo. Instead of using the estimated $5 million to construct one of these monstrosities, how about using the money to improve the driving conditions of our existing roadways? JAMES SHALER West Toledo

Monroe whistleblower case set for trial
MONROE — An Oct. 9 trial date has been scheduled for a case in which a former city of Monroe wastewater operator claims he was terminated for activities as a whistleblower after he notified Michigan environmental regulators about some unauthorized discharges to western Lake Erie in 2021. Nathan Carr’s allegations of wrongful termination will be heard by a U.S. District Court jury in Detroit unless there is a settlement before then. His attorney, Joseph X. Michaels of Ann Arbor, told The Blade on Monday he doubts there will be a settlement now, although he acknowledged the case is still technically in settlement discussions. A settlement appeared possible last December. “I think it’ll go to trial,” Mr. Michaels said. “That’s more of a gut feeling than anything, though.”
