Firefighters from multiple agencies scrambled to snuff a small wildfire that broke out at the base of Crown Mountain at about 2:10 p.m. Wednesday. Firefighters from Roaring Fork Fire Rescue and assisting agencies climbed an estimated 300 feet up the steep slope directly behind Happy Day Ranch, where Hooks Lane and Emma Road converge in an elbow. Basalt and Carbondale middle and high schools don’t have a theater program for the children that go there, instead they support the community theater effort to give the kids a chance to do what they love. “We’ve had community productions for the last few years,” said Molly Tiernan, the...
On the Fly: Embrace the springtime fluctuations
They say the only constant in this life is change, and big changes are on the fly fisher’s doorstep for the next few months. With another year of “average” snowpack, the annual runoff is already underway (sort of). In general terms, mid-May to mid-June delivers our highest flows of the year, although some years we are getting into July before the freestones begin to clear.
Umbrella Roofing founder thinks big on charitable giving
Umbrella Roofing founder and president Trevor Cannon was so impressed by the Patagonia company’s 1% for the Planet philanthropic endeavor that he started a Roaring Fork Valley variation in 2011 called 1% Close to Home. It was a challenging time to be pledging hefty charitable giving. The Roaring Fork...
‘Quiet Years’ could return due to bridge
Dear Aspen: It is only a matter of time until this happens to the Castle Creek bridge and Highway 82: Highway 50 — between Gunnison and Montrose — was closed indefinitely last week due to bridge concerns. Imagine what that would do to your commute and town? The...

Vagneur: A short history of Aspen’s contentious roads
It comes around, like a toothache, every-once-in-a-while when you least need it, but predictable nonetheless. The argument over and around the S-Curves and the Straight Shot. Ever hear of that? There are probably as many opinions about it as there are cars coming across the Castle Creek Bridge each day, so you don’t really need one from me, but here’s a little history.

Marks: Don’t be misled by Aspen Fly Right’s financial proposal
Regarding the proposal by Aspen Fly Right (AFR) to take over the FBO and withdraw from FAA’s financial grant regime, my personal opinion is that the proposal is unrealistic, unfinanceable, and uninsurable. AFR not only understates the costs of “going it alone” by hundreds of millions of dollars, but...
