Multi-million dollar library is on the way to Newport News
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Plans for a new multi-million dollar library are moving forward in Newport News. City Council approved 33 million dollars to build a new, 'Virgil I. Grissom Library,' on Warwick Boulevard after decades of use. The current Grissom Library has stood for nearly 50 years, has never undergone any major renovations, and currently serves the city's Northside population.
Gunfire strikes sleeping man in Hampton, nearby vehicle
HAMPTON, Va. — A man is recovering after he was shot while sleeping inside a home in Hampton late Sunday night, authorities said. In a news release on Monday, the Hampton Police Division (HPD) said someone approached the residence on Tabatha Circle off of Michaels Woods Drive at around 11:15 p.m. and fired multiple rounds toward the home, striking the victim once.
Southbound Monitor-Merrimac reopens after dump truck debris
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Fallen debris from a dump truck has led to the closure of southbound lanes at the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel. The incident was first reported by VDOT around 1:15 p.m. VDOT said in an updated tweet at 2:19 p.m. that all southbound lanes were closed.

Military Minute: USS George Washington departs for Japan
PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – After a six-year stay in Newport News for maintenance and updating, the USS George Washington is once again deploying to Japan. It will relieve the USS Ronald Reagan as the forward-deployed aircraft carrier in the Southern Seas in 2024. It is expected to arrive in Japan sometime towards the end of the year.

Virginia lab wins federal grant to break down forever chemicals
This is the sound of a continuous electron beam accelerator or CEBAF. It’s used at a global center for research in Newport News, the Jefferson Lab, employed to perform studies in the field of physics. Buried 25 feet deep, this facility – nearly a mile in length -- enables scientists to produce a stream of charged electrons so powerful it can break up molecules. Take forever chemicals for example. The accelerator can reduce them to their parts.
