Phelan woman dies in San Bernardino County Sheriff's Deptartment custody
A 23-year-old Phelan woman died Friday after she was found unresponsive in a Rancho Cucamonga jail cell, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department announced. Elizabeth Maria Ardon was being housed at the West Valley Detention Center when she was discovered unconscious in her cell about 9:40 a.m., according to the sheriff's department.
Crestline market reopens after 2023 snow storm roof collapse
After a year-long closure, Crestline's only market fixed its roof and reopened its doors after the massive 2023 storm wreaked havoc in the San Bernardino Mountain community and destroyed the store.The family owned and operated Goodwin & Sons Market was wiped out in March 2023 when the roof caved in from the weight of the piled snow, with the entire interior of the store destroyed as well.According to the National Weather Service, Crestline recorded 91 inches of snow the day before the roof collapsed. Fortunately, no one was inside the store at the time."After 1 year, 2 Months and 6 days we are able to serve our beautiful mountain community once again," Goodwin & Sons Market posted on Instagram. "We are overjoyed to finally serve the community once again and can't thank you all enough for your support any loyalty this past year."One day after the roof collapsed in 2023, the National Guard arrived to Crestline to bring aid and state and county organizations worked to coordinate shelter and deliver food and water to residents.Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for 13 counties including Crestline's San Bernardino County the day the market's roof collapsed.

Three dozen arrested in connection with retail thefts in San Bernardino County
Three dozen people were arrested in connection with a string of retail thefts targeting Rancho Cucamonga's popular Victoria Gardens shopping center in recent weeks. A weeks-long investigation that spanned from April 19 to May 2 resulted in 14 felony arrests and 22 misdemeanor arrests as detectives from several local agencies including the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, San Bernardino Police Department and California Highway Patrol. Investigators served two search warrants in the retail theft operation targeting stores at the shopping center, recovering more than $17,700 in stolen property, deputies said in a statement. The department began to concentrate efforts to curb rising retail thefts in Nov. 2023 with Operation SMASH & Grab, which focuses on the Rancho Cucamonga, Apple Valley, Hesperia, Victorville and Chino Hills areas in hopes of disrupting and dismantling retail store theft crews."These violent criminals terrorize the citizens of San Bernardino County by utilizing intimidation tactics and a mob mentality that creates an unsafe and uncomfortable shopping environment for our residents," said the statement from SBSD. Investigators use both conventional and non-conventional tactics to "lessen the blight created by these bad actors," the statement said. No information was provided on the identities or charges against the suspects in the ongoing investigation.
