YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – The Youngstown Playhouse held auditions Friday for the musical that will start its 100th season.

They begin the season with “Beautiful” the Carole King musical which focuses on some of the songs that defined a generation of baby boomers.

But the music wasn’t the only thing people auditioning were interested in — it was the man directing it.

Director Michael Moritz grew up in Youngstown, worked at the Playhouse, and has since won a Tony, an Emmy and been nominated for a Grammy.

Moritz spent three and a half hours listening to auditions on the Youngstown Playhouse stage.

“It’s a very full circle moment to be back on Glenwood where I did so many shows, bringing a show that has meant so much to me on Broadway back home,” Moritz said.

Moritz produced “Beautiful: The Carol King Musical” on Broadway.

“You know there’s a certain vocal affection that is Carole that we’re looking to create here,” he said.

Several people auditioned for the part saying it was nerve-racking, but also a great opportunity.

“Honestly this is one of the best experiences I’ve ever had — to work with an actual Broadway producer who worked on this show,” said Finley Andei.

Jullian Hibbard, who did shows with Moritz before he moved to New York, said it’s amazing having him back in town.

“It’s just a really exciting opportunity,” said Hibbard.

Moritz knows finding the right woman to play Carole King is important. While the songs from her most famous album Tapestry are an integral part of the show, she also wrote for other bands and singers.

“All the music she wrote for the Drifters and the Shirelles, and the Monkees — Neil Sedaka, The Righteous Brothers — We’re looking for people who can cover all of that material as well. So a really broad change of talent we’re looking for,” said Moritz.

“Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” will open the 100th season of the Youngstown Playhouse. It’ll be staged on August 23, 24, and 25 at Powers Auditorium.
