The Kauffman Homestead: A Bicentennial Farm Looks at 250 Years
Was he Augustus to his friends? Ethel and Geary Showman can’t be sure. But after reviewing the St. Andrew’s manifest, they know that a German national by the name of Augustine/Augustus Kauffman boarded a ship in Rotterdam, Holland, and arrived in Philadelphia on October 2, 1741. Like so many others, Kauffman found his way from Pennsylvania to Virginia, where he enlisted as a soldier in the French and Indian War. The German immigrant so impressed his commanding officer—none other than Col. George William Fairfax—that he received not one, but two land grants totaling 624 acres located five miles west of Woodstock on what is now Coffmantown Road.
