Green tech firm eyes Brockton for new factory

BROCKTON — The city is close to a big economic win. An innovative but well-established green tech company plans to open a factory that would bring Brockton 100 jobs. Durra Panel USA LLC uses the leftovers from wheat and rice production to make construction panels. The company touts them as a durable, eco-friendly choice that can save builders up to 32% off materials and labor costs. "It essentially replaces drywall," said Maria Giatrelis, chief revenue officer for Durra Panel USA. She and other executives from the company visited their potential Brockton home, 132 Campanelli Industrial Drive , on Monday, Oct. 26. They'd be an anchor tenant at the 300,000+ square-foot warehouse. Durra Panel would hire about 100 people Derek Layfield , founder of the Australian company that originally made Durra Panel and an advisor to the U.S. operation, said the factory would employ about 100 people when it opens. He said another 1,000 jobs might be created as support companies sprout nearby. One example: powder-coating for steel components. Brockton's labor force was a draw. "People in Brockton know how to do this," Layfield said of the various manufacturing jobs they'll need to fill. The city's location right off Route 24

SouthCoast manufacturers win 'Making it in Massachusetts' awards

Four SouthCoast manufacturers were among dozens of Massachusetts companies honored with “Making it in Massachusetts” Manufacturing Awards during a statewide manufacturing event Oct. 27 at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro. Gladding-Hearn of Somerset, Luzo Fuel of New Bedford, Buzzards Bay Brewery of Westport and Burr Bros. Boats Inc. of Marion were recognized, according to a community announcement. The Massachusetts Legislative Manufacturing Caucus presented the awards in partnership with the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative’s Center for Advanced Manufacturing and the Massachusetts Manufacturing Extension Partnership during the 11th Manufacturing Awards Ceremony, held as part of the Massachusetts Manufacturing Mash-Up. More than 45 manufacturers from across Massachusetts were selected by legislators for recognition. The awards honor manufacturers that demonstrate leadership, growth and innovation, according to the announcement. Gladding-Hearn was selected by Rep. Justin Thurber, Luzo Fuel by Rep.
