Residents in a Cherokee County apartment complex have lost their homes and many of their belongings after a fire damaged multiple units.

According to Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services, the residents of 34 units at Brooke Mill Apartments were displaced due to a fire that broke out at the complex April 28.

No injuries among residents were reported, but one firefighter sustained minor injuries from a collapse.

The fire department reported that Cherokee County and Woodstock firefighters responded to the fire just after 11 a.m. April 29 at Building 701 to find flames and smoke coming from the roof and multiple units. Crews worked to battle the fire inside while searching each apartment unit for victims. Additional firefighters were called to the scene, resulting in a three-alarm fire response.

No victims were found inside the building, but firefighters removed several animals and tended to them.

Brooke Mill Apartments is on Downsby Lane near Woodstock. Building 701 consists of over 30 residential units.

American Red Cross was called to the scene to assist families displaced by the fire. Anyone affected by the fire who has not made contact with American Red Cross is encouraged to call them at 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Forsyth County Fire Department and Cobb County Fire and Emergency Services provided mutual aid, assisting in staffing four Cherokee County fire stations while Cherokee and Woodstock firefighters worked on the apartment fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Downsby Lane was closed at Addison Way for about four hours while firefighters worked on the scene.

The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office helped with blocking the road and controlling traffic, Cherokee Fire reported.
