Volunteer crews fix boardwalks, bridges along Hemlock Creek trail
Tents were staked along the grounds of Murphy Flowage County Park near the line of Barron and Rusk counties as volunteers from across the state joined in a multi-day trailbuilding event of the Ice Age Trail. From Wednesday through Sunday around 70 volunteers each day worked on the construction and installation of boardwalks and bridges along the trail segment. Drug investigation results in four local arrests
HAYWARD - After a four-month investigation into drug activity throughout Sawyer, Washburn and Barron counties, four persons have been arrested, according to the Lac Courte Oreilles Tribal Police Department. Hurricane golfers advance to sectional
The Hayward Hurricanes boys golf team placed third in the WIAA Division 2 regional playoffs at Hidden Greens North in Solon Springs Tuesday May 21. Thereby, the Canes qualified for the sectional meet at Turtleback in Rice Lake Tuesday May 28. The top four teams at the Solon Springs regional have qualified for the sectional. They are: Lakeland Union, 307; Rice Lake, 331; Hayward, 345; and Northland Pines, 346. Scoring for the Hurricanes were: Kegan Walsh, 84; Guy Swenson, 87; Gavin Hand, 87; Liam Aldoff, 87; and Carter Roach, 93. The regional medalist was Lakeland’s Matt Haggart, who shot a 72. Qualifying as individuals for the sectional are: Ean Perry, Antigo, 76; Lawson Burkhart, Northwestern,78; and Cooper DeBriyn, Ashland, 87.

Austin Wessel, a sophomore General Business major from Hayward attending the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, is a member of the Warhawks baseball team, which secured the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season championship outright on Friday, May 3, with a pair of victories against UW-Stevens Point. The Warhawks finished the regular season with a 32-8 record, including a 19-5 mark in conference play, and began the postseason by hosting the 2024 WIAC Tournament as the top seed May 9-11. They advanced to win the NCAA regional championship with a 6-4 win over Centre. Wessel, an infielder with the Warhawks, batted .250 this season and drove in seven runs, with on-base percentage of .471. UW-Whitewater has now won 22 WIAC regular season championships, including six of the last seven.
Lions to serve pancake breakfast here
The Hayward Lions Club will serve a free pancake breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday May 25 at the Veterans Community Center. The menu will include all-you-can eat pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausages, juice, coffee and milk. Goodwill offerings will go towards all community organizations. Individuals are invited to donate a pair of used eyeglasses for an extra chance to win in the prize drawings.
