WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) — One person is dead as the result of a fiery three-car crash that took place on Thursday morning, according to the Winston-Salem Police Department.

At around 7:08 a.m. on Thursday, officers came to the intersection of Thomasville Road and Baden Road after getting a report of a crash.

At the scene, police found three cars that were involved, one of which was on fire.

Investigators say that Katharine Jones Benton, 59, of Winston-Salem, was driving a 2017 Chevrolet vehicle north on Thomasville Road and was slowing to make a left turn onto Baden Road when a 2019 Freightliner that was also driving north on Thomasville Road failed to slow down and crashed into the back of Benton’s vehicle.

As a result of the collision, Benton’s vehicle was pushed into the opposite lane of travel, according to investigators. A 2019 Nissan vehicle then collided with Benton’s Chevrolet causing it to catch fire.

Benton would be pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. The drivers of the other two vehicles were both taken to local hospitals for treatment and their injuries are considered to be minor.

The WSPD’s Traffic Enforcement Unit responded to the crash and has assumed investigative responsibility.

It is not known at this time what caused the driver of the Freightliner to fail to slow down.

There is no further information available at this time.
