Coroner identifies men found dead in vehicle in Florence County after apparent altercation

FLORENCE COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — Two people were found dead in a vehicle with gunshot wounds early Friday morning after an apparent argument turned into a shooting, authorities said.

Florence County Coroner Keith von Lutcken identified the two men as Darryal Jerome Shaw, 43, of North Augusta, South Carolina, and Demestric Dicks, 42, of Winnsboro, South Carolina.

The bodies are scheduled for an autopsy at the Medical University of South Carolina on Monday.

Florence County deputies responded at about 1:50 a.m. to a call for “an unknown problem” on Meadors Road, the sheriff’s office said. Deputies found two dead men inside possibly of gunshot wounds.

The vehicle was being driven by a woman with a man in the front seat and a man in the back seat, the sheriff’s office said. At some point, while on Meadors Road, the men started arguing which led to a violent altercation.

The man in the front seat was shot multiple times by the man in the back seat, to which the man in the front returned fire and shot back, hitting the back seat passenger in the chest and killing him, according to the sheriff’s office. Both men died from their gunshot wounds, and one of the guns was reported stolen out of New York.

Deputies said the woman was not injured and has cooperated with investigators. No charges are anticipated at this time and an investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
