Hy-Vee Offers Perks To Soften Blow Of Closed Stores
(West Des Moines, IA) -- West Des Moines-based grocer Hy-Vee is offering a number of transitional perks in reaction to backlash over announced store closings in Eastern Iowa. A free three-day-a-week shuttle to the nearest location; and free delivery within a mile of the shuttered location are some of the steps Hy-Vee is taking to mitigate criticism over the announced closing of three stores in low-income neighborhoods.

Emergency sirens activated in metro suburbs despite not meeting weather requirements
DES MOINES, Iowa — Neighbors of several western Des Moines suburbs may have heard emergency sirens blaring duringSunday night's thunderstorms. However, according to Polk County Emergency Management Services, the sirens only went off due to a system malfunction. The defect at Westcom Emergency Communications Center affected its service areas across Clive, Urbandale, West Des Moines, Norwalk, Waukee and Windsor Heights.

The main risks are damaging winds, large hail and locally heavy rainfall. The favored area for any of the strongest storms remain over southern Iowa tonight and early Sunday.

The airline agency announced it will expand its list of destinations for flights out of the Des Moines International Airport. The schedule is seasonal and for a limited time based on high-summer travel rates. Some flights, which bring back past seasonal destinations, are as low as $70.
Multiple cars on fire at Johnston Shopping Center following severe weather
JOHNSTON, Iowa — Firefighters responded to a shopping center in Johnston after cars were engulfed in flames Friday morning. The fire started in the parking lot of the Johnston Shopping Center near Hy-Vee on Merle Hay Road. Local 5 crews at the scene saw multiple vehicles on fire and heard the sound of electricity sparking.
