Back Home: A Richfield Cape Cod Finds Its Style

Perry resident and indie rocker Brian Lisik talks new music, Don Dixon
Brian Lisik is a scrappy indie rocker who won't give up. That's a compliment. The 57-year-old singer-songwriter from Perry Township seemingly is forever on a quest for more songs and more live gigs. A search for a sound that's both old and new. Finding that balance on his new album, "...presents The Slovak Club," was both haphazard and at least loosely planned. With several albums to his credit, the Akron native and Northeast Ohio recording artist initially set out only to jam with his brother, Craig Lisik, in a low-fi environment. But the resulting songs have evolved into an inspired new studio effort that will please longtime fans but also offer a twist or two along the way. Lisik sought to capture the spirit of an impromptu basement free-for-all that grew into seven new tracks. Highlights include the spunky "Why I'm Here," a bouncy, catchy tune with jangly guitar, varied instrumentation and punk rock gumption − all anchored with Lisik's raspy vocals straight from the gut and heart. Lisik's new material will be featured Nov. 7 in a solo concert and album release event at The Rialto Theatre in Akron, as well as a show Nov. 13 at The Dive

Akron, Ohio is a city stitched together by the laughter of neighbors on front porches, the hum of rubber factories past and present, and the scent of something soulful simmering in kitchens both grand and humble. Old and New: Crafty Steere Brings Akron Classics Downtown
Like its Fairlawn and Tallmadge locations, Crafty Steere’s new downtown Akron location preserves food items Akron residents know and love. In addition to being a market, find a restaurant and bar with games when it opens in early 2027, according to its Facebook page. It’s located in the former O’Neil’s Department Store building. “I had an affinity for trying to restore some of the old glory,” says founder and owner Brian Steere. “My realization was [the downtown area] just needed more business.” The market features classic favorites that launched Crafty Steere — items like Our Bar, a rich, creamy cheese spread featuring cheddar and horseradish, and Killer Brownies, triple-layer brownies with fudge and caramel, topped with walnuts, both based on West Point Market original recipes. Also shop Pandora’s Cupcakes, and enjoy deli sandwiches and a bar with 10 beers on tap and cocktails. Stop by the restaurant for a 1/2-pound cheeseburger featuring high-quality beef from Copley’s J. Parker Cattle Co. or the house-made Johnny Romano chicken fingers. Overlooking Lock 3 Park, the upstairs area has rentable event space. Crafty Steere offers a new downtown destination for artisanal shopping and dining while uplifting Akron’s rich past.

What's the Hop Shop? Read the deets about this incoming Akron spot
Happy Friday, one and all. It's time for another edition of Bites for Akronites. As usual, I have some Akron food info to share. ● West Point Market is no more, but the "West Point Market Cookbook," originally published in 2008, has been reprinted by the University of Akron Press after the cookbook was out of print for more than a decade. The reprint includes an author's note and signature by Russ Vernon. The nostalgic book features a treasure trove of recipes originally created and prepared by West Point Market staff. That includes, of course, a recipe for the store's original Killer Brownies. Its eight ingredients include a package of chocolate brownie or chocolate cake mix and chocolate chips. (West Point Market used Belgian chocolate chips.) The cookbook features recipes for breakfast, breads and sandwiches, appetizers, soups, salads, pasta, fruits and vegetables, seafood, poultry, meats and desserts. To purchase this keepsake, which costs $40, visit Crafty Steere locations in Montrose or Tallmadge. ● Akron Honey and its new neighbor, Here We Go! Coffee , announce a Lattes & Waffles pop-up party from 9 a.m. to noon on Halloween. Akron Honey will make the gluten-free cornbread waffles, and Here We Go!
