GumboFest
, , , , Despite clouds and intermittent sprinkles, GumboFest drew a hungry crowd out to the Cypress Falls Swimming Hole in Woodcreek for gumbo, good times and great music. Eleven teams of chefs competed for “Best Gumbo,” offering dark velvety roux, light spicy roux and everything in between. Taking the $500 first prize and voted People’s Choice was the Crabby Daddys team. Second place went to Dr. Brisket who won a two night stay at Cypress Falls. Third place went to the Roux on the River Team. Music by the very big sounds of the band, “T’Monde,” from Lafayette, La. played “Goodbye Ma Chère Amie,” “Time Changes Everything,” “Tesla’s Waltz,” and other outstanding Cajun tunes. The annual event that began in 1983, is held in memory of Tom Keyser, one of its founders, and benefits My Neighbor’s Keeper, a local non-profit that provides short-term, immediate financial assistance to area victims of natural disasters.

WHS Softball: Wimberley drops two district games
It was a rough week for the Texans. Wimberley dropped their Tuesday home game against the Fredericksburg Battlin’ Billies 15-0 before losing the Friday road game to the Davenport Wolves 120. Despite the two losses, Wimberley has qualified for the playoffs with Tuesday’s game against Boerne that will determine whether the Texans play as either the three seed or the four seed. In their home game against the Billies, Texans could not overcome the powerful Fredericksburg offense that scored 15 unanswered runs in the first three innings before the game was called via the runrule. The Texan offense failed to register a hit against the Billies. On Friday, in their game against Davenport, the Texans were jumped by the Wolves who scored nine runs in the first inning before adding three more in the second inning. Wimberley managed just two hits in the game before the game was called via the runrule. Wimberley will look to bounce back Tuesday night against Boerne, which occurred after the time of press.
Paying homage to the chickadee
, Let us pay homage to the chickadee, a small bird with a big personality and one of the regulars, along with titmice and cardinals, at my backyard bird feeder. I’m told the Carolina chickadee has a call that goes “chick-a-deedeedee- dee.” I don’t think I have ever heard one call. This is an acrobatic bird that can feed upside down a well as right side up. Of all birds, it is the one most likely to eat seeds from your hand. It weighs about a half ounce. Harold Osborne wrote a poem about this bird: I think that I shall never see/A...

On the Air with KWVH and Teenage Men
, Remember the clubhouse scene from “Stand By Me,” the 1986 coming of age film by Rob Reiner? Four teenage boys hang out, play cards and trade insults in the sanctum of their treehouse. The hour I spent with Benjamin Hotchkiss and Todd Crusham of KWVH’s Teenage Men program that airs Thursday from 7 to 10 p.m. felt just like that. Unfortunately the show’s third member, Paul English, could not join us the day we met. These fast friends share what they characterize as “a maniacal passion for music.” Each has vivid memories of the songs they listened to as teens....

Wimberley Players production of “Doubt: A Parable” takes us on a deep dive
“Doubt: A Parable” by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright John Patrick Shanley, is a contemporary classic. Not for its plot, although the plot is superb, not for its comedy, although there are moments that will make you laugh, and not for its thrilling action, although the actions of its characters will keep you glued to the story. It dares audiences to connect with themselves and others through a parable, a story used to illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson. The play, directed by Dr. Heather Barfield, will open on the Wimberley Players stage on April 26 and continue through May 19. It...

Predictions of possible rain and cloudy skies kept huge numbers of revelers at home. Locals stayed home as advised, leaving the charms of Wimberley to visitors from around the world. Organizers and law enforcement officials appreciated the orderly, drama-free progression of events, and visitors remarked on...
