Racist social media posts ignited outrage on Wednesday as parents of children at Wilton High School joined to condemn the messages as hate speech.

Parents and residents got together at the Wilton Green Wednesday night to speak out about posts on Snapchat containing slurs against Black people and people with autism.

"This is hate speech, this is racism," said Yasmine Luna-Lennon a parent from Wilton.

The parents say the exchange took place almost two weeks ago and quickly became the talk of the town.

Wilton Public Schools Superintendent Kevin Smith released the following statement:

"I am not at liberty to discuss any details of the student matter you reference. I do want to be very clear that the Wilton Public Schools condemns hate-based conduct in all its forms. As a school community we are redoubling our efforts to ensure a school climate that is welcoming for all of our students, and our staff is deeply committed to reinforcing a culture of belonging. We are engaged in a process of re-examining all of our policies and practices to ensure that we are addressing any issues of hate-based behavior as comprehensively as possible. I am grateful for the support of our parent community and the community at large as we tackle deep-seated issues that exist far beyond the schoolhouse."
