GASTON — Despite several outstanding individual performances Thursday, May 2, at the 1-A Tar-Roanoke Athletic Conference track and field championships at Northampton County High, the Wilson Prep girls team came up two points shy of winning the conference championship.

Led by juniors Ty’Nasia Emory, who won girls Runner of the Year, and Rachel Key-White, who had three first-place finishes, the Tigers compiled 98 points to finish a point by Warren County in first place. Emory won the 100-meter dash in 12.65 seconds and the 200 in 25.75, edging teammate Janiya Johnson in second place.

Emory and Johnson were part of two victorious relays for the Tigers with Jakala Whitehead. Aliya Jones joined on the 4×100 that finished in 51.02, nearly two seconds ahead of runner-up KIPP Pride, while Key-White was the fourth piece of the winning 4×200 tandem in 1:46.93.

Johnson. the only Wilson Prep entry in the girls 400, won it easily in 1:05.64 by nearly four seconds over Southeast Halifax’s Iyana Harrison.

Key-White won the long jump by more than three feet over North Edgecombe’s Ke’Shawna Armstrong with a winning leap of 17 feet, 7 inches. Key-White cleared the high jump bar at 5-4 to win that by 10 inches over her nearest competitor, Weldon’s Kamya Coles.

Key-White finished her personal sweep of individual events with a 15.39 winning time in the 100 hurdles as she won the same three events she did in earning the girls Most Outstanding Performer honor at the Scott Jones Memorial Classic as presented by The Wilson Times on April 16 at Beddingfield High. However, she did not merit an individual award from TRAC coaches Thursday.

Wilson Prep girls head coach Maurice Williams did, however, as he took home the TRAC Girls Coach of the Year plaque.

The Tiger boys did not fare as well, finishing seventh of out of nine teams with 57 points. Northampton County won the boys title with 130 points while Warren County was second with 98.

Keith Hines was the only gold medalist for WPA in the boys meet as he won discus with a toss of 121-7.

Brandon Wells was the runner-up in the 300 hurdles in 49.88 seconds while Wilson Prep got third-place finishes from Emmanuel Mahone in the 200 and Judah Whisonant in the 1,600 as well as the 4×100 relay.

Wilson Prep will host the NCHSAA 1-A East Regional meet on Saturday, May 11.
