With not a lot at stake except pride for the regular-season varsity softball finale Friday night at Hunt, the host Warriors rode a nine-run first inning to a 10-0 run-rule win over archrival Fike in five innings.

Hunt ended a three-game skid that saw the Warriors go toe-to-toe with 3-A Quad County Conference champion South Johnston and No. 3 West Johnston. With their fingers crossed, the Warriors sit on a 9-10 overall mark after finishing 6-8 and in fourth place in the eight-team Quad County and will await the NCHSAA playoff seeding to learn if their season will continue.

It was the end of the season for the Golden Demons, who ended up 6-16 overall and 2-12 in QCC standings.

Freshman Hannah Roberts pitched all five innings to get the win for Hunt, allowing just two singles while walking two and striking out three. Her defense only made one error, which was not the case for her counterpart, Fike freshman Cayley Jones. The Demons commmitted seven errors and all 10 runs by Hunt were unearned. Fike made four errors in the first inning as Hunt banged out four hits to take a 9-0 lead then three more Demons miscues in the second put another Hunt run on the scoreboard without the Warriors needing a hit.

After lead-off batter Allison Moore reached on an error, Roberts singled in the game’s first run before coming around on one of three passed balls in the first for Fike. First baseman Melaina Dixon roped a two-run double and scored on third baseman Josie Harrell’s single.

Fike had a runner on base every inning but the fifth. Freshman catcher Addison Barnes poked a one-out single in the second and junior Katie Sharp bounced a two-out single up the middle in the third.

Harrell had two of Hunt’s six hits while Noah Cheney was 1 for 2 with an RBI and two runs scored.
